How to Write UGC Ad Hooks That Stop the Scroll (with Examples)

Everything downstream of your hook — the offer, the proof, the CTA — only matters if someone is still watching. On a feed where thumbs move fast, you have roughly the first second or two to earn the rest of the fifteen. Here's how to write hooks that actually buy you that time, with usable formulas you can plug a product into today.

Why the Hook Carries the Ad

Most ad teams spend their energy polishing the middle of the video while the hook gets whatever line came to mind first. That's backwards. A mediocre offer with a great hook still gets watched. A great offer with a weak hook never gets seen at all, because the platform's delivery algorithm reads early drop-off as a signal to stop showing the ad. Treat the first line and the first visual as the highest-leverage two seconds you'll write.

Five Hook Formulas That Actually Work

  • The callout. Name the exact person watching. "If you're a side sleeper and you wake up with a stiff neck, watch this." Specificity beats cleverness.
  • The pattern interrupt. Open mid-action, as if the viewer walked in on something. "Okay so I was NOT expecting this to actually work—" It mimics organic content.
  • The bold, specific claim. "This is the only ring cleaner that doesn't scratch gold." Vague superlatives get ignored; a specific, falsifiable-sounding claim invites scrutiny.
  • The relatable problem. State the pain before the product appears. "I used to spend forty dollars a month on protein bars that tasted like cardboard." People stop for their own problems.
  • The question hook. Ask something the viewer can't help but answer in their head. "Why does every 'waterproof' phone case still let water in?"

Match the Hook to the Niche

  • Supplements/nutra: lead with the problem or before-state, not the ingredient list.
  • Fitness: lead with a relatable struggle or a counterintuitive claim.
  • Home improvement: lead with the annoyance being solved.
  • Jewelry: lead with a compliment-bait moment or a gifting angle.
  • AI products / e-commerce: lead with the time or money saved, as a specific before/after.

Test Hooks in Volume, Not One at a Time

You can't reliably predict which hook wins from a strategy call — you have to test them against real feed behavior. The bottleneck has always been production. This is where AI avatar generation changes the math: on AdActor you can run the same product through multiple hooks and avatar looks, each auto-assembled with B-roll and captions, and get several testable variations the same afternoon instead of the same month.

Hook Mistakes That Kill Ads

Burying the hook after a logo, being clever instead of specific, writing to please your team instead of your buyer, and ignoring platform compliance (exaggerated claims get throttled before they get a fair test).

Once you've got a hook worth testing, the fastest way to see it on screen is to run it through adactor.ai and generate your first ad free.
